  • This is a 4-day field trip where students will practice nesting protocols and techniques at a key nesting beach in the Yucatán Peninsula. Students will actively participate in a long-term monitoring program by obtaining data and managing databases. Prior to arriving in the Yucatán Peninsula, students will attend the Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation online course to prepare them for their visit.

    • Introduction to the field site

    • Sea turtle nesting monitoring

    • Field logistics

    • Night patrolling

    • Data collection on females and nests

    • Analysis of nest residuals

    • Data entering and database management

    • Data analysis - female average size, hatching and emergence success

COURSE FORMAT, DATES, & PRICE

  • FORMAT:

    Students will spend four days in the field aiding in a current conservation program. Students will apply the concepts learned during the online course, working up to 10 hours each day.

    PRICE:

    Course fee (early bird ends May 14th): $2,300 professional / $2,000 student (Regular rate: increases by $200)

    • Price includes lodging, transportation to the field site, and most meals (~$1,100)

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT

This course has been pre-approved for continuing education by (1) the Ecological Society of America for 4 CEUs in Category I(a): Scientific Education and Training, and (2) The Wildlife Society for 20 CEUs in Category I of the Certified Wildlife Biologist® Renewal/Professional Development Certificate Program. Participants must complete all exercises to earn CEUs and receive a Certificate of Course Completion. See our continuing education credit page for details.

UNDERGRADUATE OR GRADUATE CREDIT

This 2-semester credit equivalent course can be taken as an Independent Study (or the like) with pre-approval from an administrator at a student’s college or university. In addition to meeting the requirements for course completion, students must take a final assessment to earn academic credit (e.g., Pass/Fail, letter grade) for this course. MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ESA CERTIFICATION

This course is approved by the Ecological Society of America for 2 semester hours of qualified coursework that can be used to meet the minimum education requirements in biological science (ecology). To use this course for ESA certification, a student must fulfill the same requirements to earn academic credit.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Cancellations >30 days before the start date are not subject to cancellation fees. Cancellations 15-30 days before the start date are subject to a 50% cancellation fee. Sales are final 14 days before the start date.
